From the Caribbean to the Maya Wonder
Chichén Itzá is about 200 kilometers from Cancun, in the state of Yucatán, which means roughly two to two and a half hours by road. It is a perfectly doable full-day excursion from Cancun, the Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen. Here we explain every way to get there and which one suits your trip.
Ways to get there
Organized tour: the most convenient and popular option. It includes round-trip transportation, a certified guide and usually a visit to a cenote and the magical town of Valladolid, plus lunch. You do not have to worry about driving, tickets or logistics.
Rental car: gives you freedom over your schedule. You can take the toll highway (faster) or the free road that passes through small towns. You will pay tolls, parking and admission on your own.
Bus or shared van: the most economical option, with departures from Cancun's bus stations toward Valladolid or Pisté. It is slower and requires planning, but works well for budget travelers.
Site opening hours
Chichén Itzá opens every morning and the last entry is roughly an hour before the afternoon closing time. Hours can vary by season, so it is worth confirming before you go. Exploring the site at a relaxed pace takes two to three hours.
Prices and admission
Admission is made up of two fees: a federal one (INAH) and a state one charged by the government of Yucatán. Mexican citizens and residents pay a lower rate, and there is usually free access on Sundays for nationals. Since fees are updated every year, we recommend confirming the current price; if you travel with a tour, it is normally already included in the package.
