Cancun's weather in a nutshell

The climate is tropical, with two main seasons: the dry season, from November to April, and the rainy season, from May to October. During the dry season, days are sunny, with less humidity and more pleasant temperatures. In the rainy season it is hotter and rainfall usually comes as short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain.

The best time overall: December to April

If you are after the best weather, the months from December to April are ideal: clear skies, calm seas and little sargassum. This is also the high season, so hotel and flight prices go up and there are more tourists, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June to November, with the most activity between August and October. It does not mean there will be storms during your trip, but it is wise to get travel insurance and keep an eye on the forecast if you travel in those months.

Sargassum

Sargassum, a type of seaweed that reaches some Caribbean beaches, tends to be more abundant between May and October, although it varies each year. The beaches on the north side of Cancun and on Isla Mujeres tend to be less affected. If you travel in summer, consider alternatives such as cenotes, parks or Isla Mujeres.

Low season: better prices

The months of May, September and early December usually offer better prices and fewer people. If you do not mind some heat or the occasional shower, it is a great way to enjoy Cancun while spending less.
