Cenotes near Chichen Itza and Valladolid
Yucatan is the land of cenotes, natural freshwater sinkholes with crystal-clear water, and some of the most beautiful sit right next to Chichen Itza and Valladolid. Pairing the ruins with a cenote swim is the perfect formula for the day, and most of our Chichen Itza tours already include one.
Closest to the archaeological zone
Ik Kil is the most famous, minutes from Chichen Itza. Yokdzonot is community-run and far less crowded. On the way to Valladolid you will find Suytun, famous for its beam of light, and Oxman, with ropes to jump from.
One caveat: the Sacred Cenote, inside the archaeological zone, is a ceremonial site and swimming is not allowed.
Before you swim
- Use biodegradable sunscreen: it is required to protect the water.
- Life-vest rental is usually available; wear one for safety.
- Many cenotes require a quick shower before entering.
