Swim next to the largest fish in the world
Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most breathtaking experiences you can have in the Mexican Caribbean. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are gentle giants that feed on plankton and are completely harmless to people. Every summer, dozens of these animals gather off the coasts of Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Holbox.
When is the season?
Whale shark season runs roughly from mid-May to mid-September, when these animals come to feed in the warm waters of the Caribbean. The months of June, July and August usually offer the best sightings. It is a seasonal activity, so it is worth planning your trip around those dates if you want to experience it.
What to expect from the tour
The tour sets out by boat toward the area where the sharks are found, in the open sea. Groups enter the water in turns, two people at a time accompanied by a guide, to swim and snorkel alongside these majestic animals. It usually also includes a stop to swim in calm waters and food on board.
Recommendations and safety
- It is a regulated activity: a minimum distance is kept and the animals are not touched.
- Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the ecosystem.
- If you get seasick easily, consider a motion-sickness pill, since it is open sea.
- Knowing how to swim is recommended; a life vest and snorkel are provided.
A responsible experience
Choosing an operator that respects whale shark protection rules is essential to care for the species and ensure a safe, ethical experience for everyone.
