Chichen Itza: the complete guide to visiting from Cancun

What Chichen Itza is, where it is, how to get there from Cancun, how much tickets cost and when to go.

Chichen Itza is Mexico's most famous Mayan city and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World since July 7, 2007. It welcomes more than 2.5 million visitors a year and, for most travelers, it is the must-do day trip from Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

What is Chichen Itza?

It was one of the most important city-states of the Mayan world, inhabited between roughly 550 and 1200 A.D. Its name means, in Mayan, "at the mouth of the well of the Itza." At its peak it was a major political, religious and trade center of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Today it is an archaeological site managed by INAH. Its most iconic building is the Pyramid of Kukulcan, also called El Castillo: 30 meters tall and so astronomically precise that, during the equinoxes, its shadow forms a serpent that appears to descend the staircase.

Where is Chichen Itza?

It sits in the state of Yucatan, between Merida and Valladolid. From Cancun it is about 200 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. That is why the easiest way to visit is a full-day tour with transport.

What can you see inside?

  • The Pyramid of Kukulcan (El Castillo) — the symbol of the site and of the Mayan world.
  • The Great Ball Court — the largest in Mesoamerica.
  • The Temple of the Warriors and the Group of a Thousand Columns.
  • El Caracol, the observatory used for astronomical observation.
  • The Sacred Cenote, linked to ancient rituals.

Many tours pair the ruins with a cenote swim and a stop in the colonial town of Valladolid.

How to get there from Cancun

You can drive a rental car, take a bus, or — most conveniently — join an organized tour with hotel-area pickup.

How much is the entrance fee?

The ticket has two fees, federal INAH and state CULTUR, and varies by visitor type, with several exemptions. See the full breakdown in Chichen Itza tickets and price. If you travel with a Cancun Bay tour, the entrance is already included.

When is the best time to visit?

It opens every day of the year, early in the morning. Arriving at opening helps you beat the heat and the crowds. The most special dates are the equinoxes in March and September.
