Chichén Itzá and Tulum are the two most visited archaeological sites near Cancun, but they offer very different experiences. If you only have time for one, this comparison will help you decide based on what you are looking for.
Chichén Itzá
It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the most impressive Maya city on the peninsula. It sits about two hours from Cancun, inland in Yucatán. Highlights include the Temple of Kukulcán, the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote. It is the best choice if you love history, monumental architecture and experiencing a site of breathtaking scale.
Tulum
Tulum is the only Maya city built by the sea, on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean. It is closer, just over an hour from Cancun, and smaller and quicker to explore. It is ideal if you want spectacular photos, want to combine your visit with a beach or cenote, and have less time.
