Acanceh Archaeological Site: Maya Ruins in the Town

Cancun Bay Tours July 15, 2026 acanceh-archaeological-site 4 min read

Acanceh, “moan of the deer” in Maya, is a compact yet fascinating site located right in the center of the town of the same name, near Mérida. It has been continuously occupied from pre-Hispanic times to the present.

What to see

  • Pyramid of the Masks – facing the main square, with large stucco masks of deities.
  • Palace of the Stuccoes – with a highly valuable frieze of stucco figures.

Why it is special

It is unique to see a Maya pyramid coexisting with the church and square of a living town. A short, authentic and very photogenic visit.

How to visit

It is about 25 km southeast of Mérida. Book your tour with Cancun Bay Tours.
