At the spring equinox, around March 20 or 21, and the autumn equinox, around September 22 or 23, the afternoon sun casts a series of shadow triangles down the pyramid's north stairway, forming the body of a serpent descending to the carved head at its base. It is the Maya's astronomical design turned into a show.
