The Pyramid of Kukulcan, known as El Castillo, is the most famous building at Chichen Itza and the symbol of the entire Mayan world. It is the image that made it one of the New 7 Wonders of the World on July 7, 2007.

How tall is it?
It stands about 30 meters (98 ft) tall, on a square base roughly 55 meters per side. It has nine stepped tiers and a temple on top dedicated to Kukulcan, the feathered serpent.
A calendar in stone
Its design is a Mayan calendar: each of the four stairways has 91 steps which, together with the top platform, total 365 — the days of the year. The Maya were extraordinary astronomers.
The descending serpent
During the spring and autumn equinoxes, in March and September, sunlight casts a rippling shadow down the north stairway that looks like a serpent descending. It is the most sought-after moment of the year.
Can you climb it?
No. For preservation, climbing the Kukulcan Pyramid is not allowed. You admire and photograph it from the ground.
How to visit
