Cancun Bay Tours July 15, 2026 dzibanche-archaeological-site 5 min read

Dzibanché, “writing on wood” in Maya, is the largest and most important Maya settlement in southern Quintana Roo (about 40 km²). It is believed to have been the original seat of the powerful Kaan (Snake) dynasty, which later ruled from Calakmul.

What to see

  • Temple of the Owl and Temple of the Captives – with reliefs and monumental staircases.
  • New stucco reliefs – discovered in 2024, alluding to the power of the Kaan.
  • Plazas and palaces amid the jungle.

Why it is special

Its role in the history of the great Kaan dynasty and its recent discoveries make it one of the most fascinating sites in the Maya south.

How to visit

It is north of Kohunlich, near Chetumal, in the same region as the Bacalar lagoon tour. Book your tour with Cancun Bay Tours.
