Kohunlich Archaeological Site: the Masks of the Sun

Cancun Bay Tours July 15, 2026 kohunlich-archaeological-site 5 min read

Kohunlich is one of the most beautiful Maya sites in southern Quintana Roo: over 200 structures amid a lush palm jungle, near Chetumal. It blends the Río Bec and Petén styles and was inhabited from the 6th to the 13th century.

What to see

  • Temple of the Masks – with huge stucco masks (about 2 m) of the sun god Kinich Ahau, its great treasure.
  • Water catchment system – remarkable hydraulic engineering.
  • Acropolis and plazas among palm trees.

Why it is special

The masks, unique in the Maya world, and the jungle setting make it a peaceful, fascinating visit away from the crowds.

How to visit

It is about 65 km west of Chetumal. Book your tour with Cancun Bay Tours.
